I plan to do this
too...so, to begin, I was reading
' Blood and Chrysanthamums' by Nancy Baker over the Old Year/New Year weekend. That's a tale of vampires, the conflicted kind really, and I enjoyed it far more than my sentence synopsis might suggest. It was exactly right to read when one is satiated with food and drink and desire nothing more demanding than a foot rub.

On the last day of my holiday I read 'The Dead of Winter' by Chris Priestley. I read it in one sitting as the rain lashed the window panes & wind howled down the chimney. This book sounds like an awful parody - orphans in desolate houses, insanity, locked in secret rooms, at least one ghost...here is the opening line to give you a taste "I looked into that grave with as much a sense of dread and despair as if I had been staring into my own." Gracious! Isn't that wonderful? Doesn't it make you long for a wintery day alone to read it as I did, hoping the hairs will stand up on the back of your neck? I suspect it might be intended for younger readers. Otherwise I'd give in 5 stars out of 5 on a chart of High Gothic Camp!

I struggle to read for pleasure when I am working...but it is the weekend now and I will read 'House of Silk' by Anthony Horowitz. Tim says there is a twist, so I hope I don't guess it.

I have spent the past hour looking thru' other livejournals and am taking the liberty of adding complete strangers to my friend's lists...i hope you don't mind! And if you do, I sincerely apologise & will remove you immediately.

the reason I have decided to do so is because I have decided to make new friends and aquaintances this year & thought I would do this in the cyberworld as well as the more real world.

I also intend to post more and get out more...I think I've been too insular, too reclusive lately so this is the equivalent of my smiling at you in a cafe and complimenting you upon your outfit etc!

it is supposed to be on an Australian school's answer machine

"To lie about why your child is absent, press 1.

To make excuses for why your child did not do his/her assignment, press 2.

To complain about what we do, press 3.

To swear at a faculty member, press 4.

To ask why you didnt get the information that was already enclosed in your newsletter and several flyers, press 5.

If you want us to raise your child press 6.

To complain about bus transportation, press 7.

To complain about school lunches, press 8.

To request another teacher for the third time this year, press 9.

If you realize that this is the real world, and your child must be held accountable for his own behavior, classwork, and that it's not the teacher's fault for your child's lack of effort, hang up and have a nice day."

One of my 'projects' is to take Tishbite to as many local graveyards as possible. Yesterday we went to Undercliffe, in Bradford. My friends (all of us Recovering Goths)were delighted by her!

Emma took some fabulous photographs x
velvetina: (Default)

Took Tishbite to Utley cemetary after i finished work (yes work, sorting out archive materials)

and then met - via her curious saluki - a fascinating Bavarian anthropologist! I love meeting interesting people accidentally.

Tishbite is fluent in Enochian.

My doctor has forbidden me to speak a word for the time being as my vocal chords are so damaged.
Was it the throat/chest infection? Was it a clove cigarette too many? Was it singing Living on a Prayer at the End of Term do?

Whatever it was, it is difficult NOT to speak....and, curiously, i find other people either i) start wispering to me(?!?) ii) speak to me as if I had severe learning difficulties or iii) ask me questions, usually too complex to answer with a nod or shake of the head!

T. is out this evening seeing an ACDC tribute band 'Highway to Hull'. Obviously i am happy not to be accompanying him.

I have discovered I can now wear Chanel No 5, if I wanted to. It never worked well before, but seems to suit my middle-aged skin.

Current Preoccupations: 'What Katy Did';patchouli incense;the wonderful wild weather; Tishbite Evangeline Ghastly.

oh, and I no longer have an office...we, as a department, now have a whole room to ourselves for hanging out in; so I have a corner drapped with green sari fabric (house colour -green & silver - just like Slytherin! Hurrah!) and, for the educational benefit of the Twilight generation, some lovely photographs of Bela Lugosi, Max Shreck and Gary oldman's Brides.

On tuesday, i may or may not have to take a school trip to see.....ECLIPSE!!! I am however quite interested in seeing what Pete Murphy is up to and I will see if I can find myself a 'Team Jacob' t-shirt this weekend.

I haven't been at work for practically a fortnight & would like to say that I feel all better & full of bounce, but i just don't.

The stupid thing is, I know what i need to get better; its fresh air, ideally by the sea, and lots of sleep & music in the background. What i do not need is to be here in Haworth, in this house that distresses me so, and the worry of visitors or delivery men or plumbers or the voices of neighbours.

i should quite like to be here

notice the emptiness of the beach.
I'd be in the dunes, on a tartan rug with a thermos of tea, a good book and a parasol.

1 – What is your dream job?

ah, in my dream job I am employed to research things...I have an office of my own & see no one unless I choose to. I have an unlimited expense account. I am set a task, perhaps given an artefact. I have to find out everything I can & then present my findings. If we are being completely Dream Job, then obviously I'm only asked to research things I find interesting!

2 – The colour Pink – are you a fan, or should it not be allowed?

the pink of winter morning skies, sugar mice, fragranced rose petals, cream soda cocktails, the edge of daisies? why yes allow pink!

3 – If you could swap lives with someone (anyone) for a day, who would you choose?

having read too many Cautionary Tales as a child, I'd have to make all kinds of conditions when making my choice...can I choose myself age 17, with full access to horses, the sea & absolutely no responsibilities or fears at all? If that is cheating, I'll choose Rachel Brice.

4 – What is your favourite meal you like to make?

to make? I don't much care to cook but possibly toasting at an open fire will count. My favourite thing to eat are hazelnuts! And chocolate.

5 – What was your first pet?

As a child, a cat called Tiger and a couple of dogs, Gin and Cappy. Tiger used to put his dead - and sometimes not quite dead- prey in the bathtub so there was always that to deal with every day.

bought cologne

and a perfumed fan

very tempted to lie in my neighbours paddling pool

except her child had probably wee-d in it

so i didn't.

I'm unwell & at home; unable to talk as my voice is quite gone & my chest is in a vice. The silver lining is that I was at home to take possesion of

my very own Evangeline Ghastly doll, who I am naming Tishbite.

She'd been held in customs a while (I had to pay an exortionate ransom fee!) and I was thinking she'd be there indefinately, but as it happened I was at home, lying on my sofa in my kimono coughing up blood (not really) and watching back-to-back Sherlock Holmes.

I couldn't resist taking photographs of her, even though I'm supposed to be....I was too ill on Monday to partake in an Amazon order my Best Beloved was putting together...too ill to take a bath, too ill to walk to the corner shop for chocolate even!!
velvetina: (Default)
I wish I was like her

I've always felt that she was my ideal self, my fantasy self

but I'm not brave enough.
